Archie Releases Tania Del Rio’s ‘Sabrina’ In Manga-Style Paperbacks, Fans Of Teenage Witchery Rejoice
If you’re a longtime ComicsAlliance reader, you may have already heard us sing the praises of Tania Del Rio’s fantastic 42-issue run on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. It’s a great run, combining Del Rio’s fantastic manga-inspired artwork with an ongoing Harry Potterish story of a magical world in the grips of a conspiracy and rebellion, with a huge helping of romance thrown in for good measure. The only real flaw is that if you weren’t reading it as it was coming out, there was a stretch of time where it wasn’t reprinted and wasn’t easy to find.Fortunately, that is no longer the case: In addition to releasing the issues digitally, Archie is putting out a set of digest-sized omnibus collections of Tania Del Rio’s Sabrina. The first volume was listed in Previews for January, with 256 pages of witchity teenage romance for $10.99. It’s a comparable price to picking up the issues digitally, with the main difference being that the printed version, in true manga fashion, is black and white. In a way, that’s a shame — the original versions have nice colors that make everything pop — which is a good thing when people are throwing around spells and other visually interesting elements — but it still looks pretty good in the grayscale form.Either way, it’s a nice thick chunk of all-ages comics that are well-done on every level. Sabrina was one of the most underrated books of the past decade, and now that it’s coming out in widely available formats, you’re losing every excuse you had for not jumping on.Read More: http://www.comicsalliance.com/2013/01/18/archie-releases-tania-del-rios-sabrina-in-manga-style-paperba/#ixzz2ITGIVAtj

‘Husbands #5: Arch Nemesis’ and ‘Husbands #6: Agent Secrets’ Review - The Extraordinary Ordinary!

Written by Bryant Dillon, Fanboy Comics President
Friday, 30 November 2012 05:25

Well, we’ve reached the end of the road, comic book sniffers! This week saw the wrap up of Dark Horse Comics’ digital alliance with Jane Espenson and Brad “Cheeks” Bell’s Husbands property, and the last two chapters are absolutely stellar. For such an unlikely foray into comics, team Husbands has really delivered in a way that “the big two” endlessly struggle to achieve. Espenson, Bell, and Dark Horse have given this geek a booster shot of optimism that the comic book medium still has the potential to go way beyond the “capes and cowls,” appealing to new readers who have no interest in the super-powered beating that crap out of each other during the latest event o’ epic-ness.

Before we get to the finale of the series, let me address the awesomeness of Husbands #5: Arch Nemesis. I had thrown in a Kevin Keller joke in one of my previous reviews, but I never actually believed Brady, Cheeks, and Haley would actual be plopped into a pseudo Riverdale! This issue is super fun from start to finish, from the “Chick and Brick” interpretations of the leads, the hip, rhyming nature of the dialogue, the wonderfully appropriate hairstyles and clothing, to the subtle, yet absolutely fantastic, trademark Archie-style noses! Husbands #5: Arch Nemesis is full of laughs (the omnipresent narrator has some great lines in this one, such as the instantly quotable classic, “During football practice, Zak begins to suspect there may be a document in his pants … ”) and also carries an anti-bullying message that was much appreciated by this former dweller of the inside of lockers (not by choice, mind you). Let me give a much-deserved shout out to artist Tania del Rio for her wonderful work on the book before we move onto the finale issue.

While Husbands #6: Agent Secrets doesn’t feature the infectious pep of the previous issue, it still manages to be the perfect send off for the series. Artist Ron Chan returns to wrap up the series with his trademark smooth and expressive style, while Espenson and Bell deliver a deliciously devious spy adventure that, like any decent Bond film, delivers disguises, speed boat antics, and some much-appreciated (at least by this reviewer) toplessness from both the male and female members of the cast (who knew Haley would look so hot wearing a snake for a shirt!). My perverted and scaly desires aside, the “cherry on top” for this issue is the end of the tale which states, “In an ordinary world, our heroes are simple people … with an extraordinary love.” It’s the perfect message for Brady and Cheeks and the very heart of the story Husbands aims to express, no matter what the medium. Listen up, comic book sniffers: all you need is love.

You can find out more about Husbands #5: Arch Nemesis and Husbands #6: Agent Secrets, read a free preview, and purchase a digital copy of each issue (for only $0.99) at the Dark Horse Comics site. Also, don’t miss out on the Husbands hardcover which is now available for preorder! As I stated in one of my previous reviews, this is a series that will only be enhanced in every way by being collected, and Ron Chan has crafted another brilliant cover for this edition! Do not miss out on it! And, finally, if you still haven’t yet watched the Husbands sitcom, then be sure to stop by and familiarize yourself with what Ira Glass calls “the future of TV.”

That’s all for now, comic book sniffers. Until next time, love the one you’re with (no matter what genre you happen to be swinging through).

Husbands #5: Arch Nemesis
https://digital.darkhorse.com/profile/2605.husbands-5-arch-nemesis/

The hit sitcom Husbands tells the story of famous gay newlyweds Brady and Cheeks, who sparked a media firestorm when they woke up legally wed after a drunken Vegas weekend. But undoing their “I Dos” with a quickie divorce would only undermine the hard-fought battle for equality, so they decide to give this marriage thing a go. After all, they were doing okay when they were dating …
Now, a mystical wedding gift launches the couple on a series of adventures—a tongue-in-cheek journey through iconic genre realms—filled with obstacles that threaten to tear them apart.
Written by Husbands creators Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Brad Bell, this comic-book continuation of the sitcom phenom sends Brady and Cheeks into a superhero showdown, a fairytale fantasy, a Holmesian mystery, an epic galactic battle, a madcap high school romp, and a saucy secret-spy thrill ride.

Jane Espenson’s ‘Husbands’ Gets Comical

by Tami Katzoff (@tvtamijo)
Whedonverse veteran Jane Espenson is very familiar with the comic book world – the TV writer/producer has been involved with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” comics for years. So when her web series “Husbands” started attracting a lot of attention, the idea of a new comic seemed perfectly logical.
“People were making jokes about my sci-fi connections,” says Espenson, who created “Husbands” with Brad “Cheeks” Bell. “We got a lot of interview questions of people winkingly going, ‘What’s next – Husbands in space?’ And it started sounding good!”
“Husbands” follows a newly-hitched couple, actor Cheeks (Bell) and athlete Brady (Sean Hemeon), as they deal with the challenges of being gay, famous and married. After the show’s second season wrapped, Bell and Espenson started scripting a six-issue Dark Horse digital comic.

Bell quickly learned that writing comics is very different from writing television. “I looked at a comic book script for a ‘Buffy’ comic that Jane gave me as a template, and I could barely follow it,” he remembers. “There was so much description and then there’s the dialogue and then you have to explain where everything is in the panel… It was all very confusing.”
But Bell soon developed a feel for the writing style and eventually scripted the sixth issue of “Husbands” on his own. “He’s much more visual than I am,” says Espenson. “He was all over it.”
The first issue of the comic, which premiered on October 24th, starts with Cheeks and Brady opening their wedding presents. Suddenly they’re inexplicably transported to what Bell describes as “a Sky Captain-esque 1930’s retro future” where Brady is a superhero named Light Fantastic. Subsequent issues will place Brady and Cheeks in other exotic settings and exciting predicaments.
“They are given a mysterious gift that launches them into this series of adventures,” Espenson explains. “Will these adventures split them apart, or will they make them closer together?”

The “Husbands” comic series features the work of several different artists: Ron Chan, Natalie Nourigat, M.S. Corely, Ben Dewey and Tania del Rio. It will be compiled into a hard copy collection, available on March 27th, 2013.
Bell promises that the comic will be “fun and thrilling and hilarious and sexy.” And Espenson expects that the adventures of Cheeks and Brady will continue. “I don’t think the final page of that hard copy issue will be the last you’ll see of ‘Husbands,’” she says. And after a web series and a comic, theorizes Bell, the possible incarnations are limitless. “It could be a chocolate bar! With a concept album! In 3-D!”
